Cy Twombly, born as Edwin Parker 25 April 1928 - 5 July 2011, was an American painter, sculptor and photographer. Twombly's paintings are large-scale, calligraphic and graffiti-like works on solid fields of mostly gray, tan or off-white colors. His works are part of the permanent collection of most museums of modern art around the world.
Many of Twombly's paintings and works on paper shift toward romantic symbolism. Twombly often quoted the poets of Stéphane Mallarmé, Rainer Maria Rilke and John Keats, as well as many classical myths and allegories in his works.
In November 2014 an untitled artwork of Cy Twombly was sold at 69.6 million USD.
