Marlene Dumas was born in 1953 in Cape Town, South Africa. Dumas lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied in de 70's painting at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. Here she came in contact with Art Theory and Conceptual Art. During these forming years, Dumas collages, combined with cut-outs, made text and drawings. The theme contradiction she had in South Africa's life with apartheid (blacks against cultures, cultural differences, gender confrontation) influenced her work.
Marlene Dumas is one of the most leading and best-selling painters of the moment.
